Camille Swift wowed the crowd as a showcase performer on trapeze in 2014. (You've probably seen some of her stunning pictures in our promotional materials!) This year we're thrilled to bring her back as not just a performer, but as an instructor.
A: In 2014, I performed in the "Inspire" showcase and also took a few classes. At the time, I was teaching trapeze in Champaign, and so a few friends/trapeze students of mine made the road trip to Des Moines together. It was a blast!
Q: What insights, inspiration, or ideas did you take away from the 2014 Aerial Expo?
A: Performing in the showcase was a tremendous event for me because, although I had been teaching trapeze for about a year and a half, I had never performed. So, when I got up there and the performance went really well, it was an exhilarating moment that told me, "Yes, you can do this."
While I enjoyed the classes I attended, I noticed right away that no trapeze was offered, so I told Felicia Coe right away that I would be interested in teaching next year.
Q. What are you most looking forward to for the 2015 Aerial Expo?
A: I am looking forward to teaching actually because I have become so focused on performance and my own training, I don't teach much anymore and I miss it!
Q. When did you take your first aerial class and what was your initial impression like?
A: I took my first class back in the summer of 2010 at the The Aloft Loft in Chicago; I felt fascinated and challenged, but I also felt like I was physically and mentally much more suited to aerial arts than I had been to ballet (which I practiced for 8 years). I basically found my raison d'être.
Q. What advice would you give to someone who is brand new to Aerial Expo?
A: Try as many classes as you are able! Each aerial discipline has something to offer, even the ones you don't think you would like. For example, I personally don't much care for silks, but they challenge me in ways that trapeze doesn't and make me a better overall aerialist.
Catch up with Camille at this year's Aerial Expo, where she'll be teaching trapeze and performing in our Red Carpet Spectacular!
